Have you ever seen a flying 88-foot long octopus? The Morro Bay Kite Festival is hosting such a novelty this month!

Come witness a spectacular performance of dancing shapes and flying colors at the 13th annual Kite Festival. A weekend packed with unique kite experiences, this festival is a treasure chest of excitement, fun, laughs and adventure. Bring the whole family and enjoy all Morro Bay has to offer on this special weekend.  

Check out this itinerary to get some ideas for your weekend plans:

FRIDAY, APRIL 27

3pm:   Check into your hotel room and receive your SPRING PASSPORT. The passport is a gateway to savings at several of the best stores and restaurants in Morro Bay. Enjoy an ensemble of 11 offers to enjoy during your downtime this weekend. Paddleboard, kayak, surf or whale watch for once-in-a-lifetime prices. 

3pm-6pm:  The festival will kick off with the nail-biting KITE FIGHTING DISPLAY. Popularized in the book The Kite Runner, teams will fly their kites with acute precision and skill to knock the opposing kite out of the sky.

6pm-7pm:   We will celebrate the start of the weekend at Tognazzini’s Dockside for some delicious seafood and refreshments during a WELCOME FLYERS PARTY. Mingle and meet the esteemed professional flyers, hailing from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

SATURDAY, APRIL 28

10am-4pm:   Wander and be wowed at the variety activities possible with kite flying. There will be delicious treats available to enjoy as you watch the dazzling show of beautiful kites along the water’s edge. See and try out kite surfing and sand surfing. Kids will also receive a FREE kite at the festival (first 500 kids).

1pm and 3pm:   Candy Drop! Look for a giant kite as it sprinkles candy over the festival.

4pm-6pm:   Come to Giovanni’s Fish Market for the FLYING HIGH FISH FRY. Enjoy a special price exclusively for kite festival goers for $9.99. Original price is $13.99. Bring a friend or two, and make a friend or two!

SUNDAY, APRIL 29

1pm-4pm:   Return to see the last bits of the kite festival you missed yesterday. Vendors and flyers will be on the beach until 4pm.

4pm:   Before leaving town, enjoy a short hike to the best vantage point in town. Black Hill Trail boasts an incredible view of the entirety of Estero Bay as well as the city. Turn onto the Morro Bay Golf Course driveway off of State Park Road. Follow this driveway to the end where you will find a parking lot. This is the gateway to the trail.
