Morro Bay, CA, August 25, 2016 – There’s a lot of pure unadulterated cuteness going on in Morro Bay and they are called Sea Otters!  What better time to catch a glimpse of these sea creatures in their natural habitat than this September in the quaint town of Morro Bay as they celebrate the 14th Annual National Sea Otter Awareness Week, September 18-24, 2016.  Otters are everywhere and easy to find and close enough for a good look, just plop down a beach chair along the Morro Bay Harbor Walk that runs along Coleman Drive and start watching. This location is also a great viewing place from your vehicle as well. If there isn’t a family of them hanging out already, they will soon appear. Target Rock area located on the southeast side of Morro Rock is probably the best landmark to work from according to Eric Endersby, the Morro Bay Harbor Director. Mother’s or Coleman beach is another great location at the intersection of Embarcadero and Coleman Drive.

“The many sea otters in Morro Bay are integral to the health of our harbor environment and to our enjoyment of bay waters,” says Eric Endersby, Morro Bay Harbor Master. But, he cautions, “When viewing otters be very careful as they are wild animals and may react if approached. If viewing from the water, best to stay at least five kayak lengths away at all times and enjoy them in a responsible manner.”

There are also safe viewing spots all along the Embarcadero inbetween the many restaurants, shops and wine bars where there are spots open to the public for viewing the wildlife. It’s hard to come to Morro Bay and not see an otter poke their head out of the water. Paddle out in a sea kayak or rent a boat at Bay Cruisers and Electric Boats and commune with California Sea Otters on the water. Visitors can also take a ride on the Lost Isle Tiki boat to see the California Sea Otters and the ever-barking Sea Lions with a quick detour to Morro Bay natural sand spit. Kayaks can be rented at Kayak Horizons and the Kayak Shack.
